Logline recap (07/02/2026)
This project storyline was designed to teach young to older teenagers a valuable lesson during their cognitive development thinking phase, where they start to process valuable lessons.
Figure 1.2
Design inspiration(07/02/2026)
The idea was to combine both 2D & 3D animation designs, with the goal of achieving a more natural and visually cohesive result.

Development Process

2D animation tools(15/02/2026)
The tools I planned to use specifically for 2D animation are the iPad application Flipaclip for frame-by-frame animation, and Adobe After Effects for any part that could be done puppet style.
For the 3D animation background, my teammates used Blender to create, colour, and texture the backgrounds.

Animation technique (15/02/2026)
The technique I used for 2D animation is the importance of Timing, Posing, movement, etc. These are the techniques I learnt in my animation fundamentals class.
Challenges
Figure 1.5
Challenges(25/02/2026)
I couldn't start with the main outline of the character due to the complex movements. I had to do the rough sketch of animation on how the character will move in the final before starting the main outline, which further takes up more time. I did try to skip this part, and it ended up looking extremely stiff, which my lecturer had pointed out as well.
Figure 1.6
Challenges(25/02/2026)
Even after doing the outline, I would have to keep adjusting the clothing to follow the movement being made, or else it wouldn't look as realistic and would just take the attention away from the main point of the video. I also had to be careful with how I moved the clothing, as if I did it too differently, it would look like its wibrating in the final. I don't usually take on drawing human characters with clothing due to this issue.

Challenges(25/02/2026)
While coloring takes the longest, as I had to colour each frame individually. I also had to focus on the movement of the shadows to make sure they don't look awkwardly placed.
Aesthetics and Conceptual Integrity
Figure 1.8
Aesthetics and Conceptual Integrity(10/03/2026)
I was pleasantly surprised at the results when I combined the 2D character animation with the 3D background. I was worried it would look awkward and once again steal the attention from the main purpose of the animation.
Technical Application Figure 1.9
Technical Application(20/03/2026)
I managed to try using After Effects for the puppet animation and realised the process behind it, I had to separate the limbs from the main body to make sure that the movement only affects one part of the body and dont the whole.

Clips(20/03/2026)
These are the frame by frame animations i did on flipaclip, i did have to purchase a premium version as the basic was impossible for this project.
Feedback
Week 1:
General Feedback: draw out all the characters, including the side characters, in model format, like the previous animation class. Draw the assets as well, like the 2D items that they will use for the animation, to make sure we can get it done on time.
Week 2:
General Feedback: The hands and legs of the characters should be separated as much as possible to make it easier to do the puppet method. Within this week, try to test the puppet method and also try to match the frame-by-frame animation to the puppet so that it looks smooth and harmonious.
Week 4:
General Feedback: The movement of the washing plates feels too stiff. Try to add some more small body movement to make it feel more natural.
Week 5:
General Feedback: I am okay with the combination of the background and the 2D character, but make the background texture less shiny as to match the 2D animation. If it's too much texture, the background will feel a bit disconnected.
Week 6:
General Feedback: The frame-by-frame animation is too blurry; you cannot scale it bigger as it doesn't match the frame ratio from the other application.
Week 7:
General Feedback: I cannot tell where the climax is or what the narrative formats are. There are some parts that are a bit glitchy. The running in the hallway had a bit of a sliding effect. The shadow movement is very time-consuming and with the time you had, you shouldve just settled for a simpler design. Overall, the work is pretty average.
Final Submission
Reflection
Throughout the 7-week execution phase of our major project, I developed both my technical animation skills and my ability to handle challenges within a team environment. This phase required us to bring our planned ideas into a final animation while continuously refining our work.
During production, I improved my understanding of workflow efficiency, character rigging for puppet animation, and the integration of frame-by-frame techniques. I also became more aware of the importance of subtle movements, visual consistency between 2D and 3D elements, and maintaining proper technical settings to avoid quality issues. These adjustments helped improve the overall smoothness and cohesion of the final animation.
However, teamwork was one of the main challenges. There was a language barrier within the group, which sometimes made communication and collaboration less effective. We eventually split into two smaller teams, with me focusing on 2D animation. Due to time constraints and my teammate’s limited capacity, I took on a larger portion of the workload, which became quite overwhelming at times. Despite this, I still had to assist others, which made it more difficult to manage my own tasks.
Another challenge was maintaining a shared understanding of the project, as some members required repeated clarification and were less independent in problem-solving. This slowed down progress and added pressure, especially when deadlines were approaching.
Overall, this experience taught me the importance of adaptability, time management, and clear communication in a production setting. Moving forward, I would aim to establish clearer roles, better documentation, and stronger boundaries in workload distribution. Although challenging, this project helped me grow both technically and personally in handling real-world team dynamics.
