B. Environment and Layout Design

C. Storyboarding

Technical Research

Instructions (05/02/25)

Character design Progression

Moodboard:

Note: Main Character appearance description: brown hair, brown eyes, slightly buff, has his fire fighter uniform on in most of the animation, if not in uniform he is in basic t-shirts and pants, looks like Tadashi from big hero 6

Figure 1.2
Character moodboard (20/02/25)

  • In our opinion, Tadashi is most fitting to Miles character including with body shape.
Figure 1.3
Character Body type(20/02/25)

  • While also using Tadashi as the body type example, we are also using Nanami from Jujutsu Kaisen as a reference for only body type.
  • Type: tall, muscular-built, neat and tidy fashion.

Figure 1.4
Mentor (20/02/25)

  • For our mentor design , we would be using a similar body type to Mile as they have the same profession.
  • Mentor appearance description: older man with a lot of experience had wrinkles and burn marks, is fierce and wise

Figure 1.5
Antagonist inspiration (20/02/25)

  • Shoka is a small fire character that is suppose to represent the fire and is something Miles has to fight off.
  • He has to be fierce.

Sketches

Figure 1.6
Character design idea 1 (27/02/25)

Feedback from Sir:
  1. The character is too small and frail, does not look like a strong firefighter.
  2. The design should be proportionate and follow the design principles using the head method.
  3. Design could be much better.

Figure 1.7
Character design idea 2 (02/03/25)

  • This is referencing from wreck it ralph character. We were exploring some options.

Feedback from Sir:
  1. This one is too big and not proportionate enough, the arms are too big for Miles character.

Figure 2.1
Shoka design idea 1 (02/03/25)

Figure 2.2
Character design idea 4 (02/03/25)

Feedback from Sir:
  1. The Character design for Shoka is fine.
  2. For design idea 4: the first one is a bit too cartoonish, the second design does not seem to be the same type of design for both characters and the third design is fine, its just the mentors legs being too skinny and Miles having huge feet. However the body design for Miles is good.

Manhattan surrounding Reference(20/02/25)

  • Following the location of the animation, we found references using pictures of Manhattan buildings.

Sketches

First environment Sketches(25/02/25)

Feedback from Sir:
  1. Follow the Manhattan exterior of buildings.
  2. also add the map of the entire area and have different angles of each buildings.

layout design(27/02/25)

  • After trying to do a 2D version of the layout map, we decided it is more convenient and accurate if we use 3D modeling to do the environment.

Storyboarding

Figure 4.9
Thumbnail design (05/03/25)

  • I drew one drawing for each scene and if necessary, i added another drawing just to make it more connected.

FINAL SUBMISSION

REFLECTION

I was in charge of art direction, directing the design for the characters and storyboarding. I think this task is one of the most challenging as i did not realize how difficult it can be to coordinate the character design with the group. We managed to get through it with a lot of discussions and instructing. The environment design with the map was also relatively difficult as to draw a map of the layout is quite challenging, in the end we decided to use blender to do the models which was time consuming but still the better options compared to the 2d drawings.

For the Storyboarding, it was a lengthy process using a lot of brain power as i need to visualize the entire animation video and draw it out. However i manages to get through it slowly with time and determination.
