LECTURE

Week 6 (28/10/24) : Staging and Exaggeration

Clarity in Staging
  • if wanna convey something like this person eats a lot - exaggerate it and don't add anything else none related.
  • if wanna insert words, make sure the scene allows the viewer to read it at least 3 times
  • make one scene longer if you need viewer to process something.
  • if there's a focus on something, make sure the other things don't catch too much attention with more movement.
Exaggeration
  • for emotions, make it more exaggerated to really make the viewer feel it.
  • push the exaggeration to be too much if its too fast.
Anticipation
  • a clue for the audience on what happens next, if don't have it can be unrealistic and weak.

Week 7 (04/11/24) : Pose to Pose and Straight Ahead

Pose to Pose Method

  • key
  • extreme
  • breakdown
    • create arcs
Straight Ahead Method

  • In-between
  • Good for elements that are unpredictable like
    • fire
    • smoke

PROJECT 1A CHARACTER DESIGN PROCESS

Figure 1.2
idea sketches (24/10/24)
  • My whole idea is to reference from Toothless (How to Train your Dragon) and Stitch (Lilo and Stitch)
  • I had the idea to create a Chinese dragon, however it did not have long enough legs for the upcoming projects.

Figure 1.3
final idea sketch(26/10/24)
  • This character was inspired by Stitch (Lilo and Stitch) and Toothless (How to train your dragon).
  • also inspired by a squirrel and a cat.
  • her personality also matches squirrels and cats.
  • She is about 3 years old and is extremely playful.

Figure 1.4
final idea sketch (26/10/24)
  • She has a tail of a squirrel and paws like a cat.
  • Her overall design resembles Stitch a lot as that is my favorite animation character.

Figure 1.5
final idea sketch (poses)(26/10/24)

  • The poses are made to make her look playful, curious and energetic as a young child.

  • I then, refine the first traced sketches for the final submission.

  • Doing the same for the rest.
  • I added emotions for this one to give a bit more insight on her character.

coloring(27/10/24)
  • I added some details on the tail because i felt it was too empty.
  • I used the color palettes of Stitch.

FEEDBACK

Week 6 (28/10/24) :

General Feedback
  • add lines for the head, body, leg, arms for the model sheet.
  • need consistency in height.
  • in A4 size.

Specific Feedback

Figure 3.4
Feedback on pose sheet(28/10/24)

Figure 3.5
Feedback on model sheet(28/10/24)

Figure 3.6
Feedback on pose sheet(28/10/24)
  • spread out the arms a but more, make more obvious.
  • focus on negative space.

Figure 3.7
Feedback on pose sheet(28/10/24)
  • too straight, create some curve for sitting down.

Figure 3.8
Feedback on pose sheet(28/10/24)
  • curve the body slightly, can make a bit for interesting pose.

Figure 3.9
Feedback on pose sheet(28/10/24)
  • the middle one is fine with the body hanging so the gravity pull.
Figure 4.1
Feedback on model sheet(28/10/24)
  • emphasize on the knee, having a cat like legs.

Figure 4.2
Feedback on model sheet(28/10/24)
  • legs need to be consistent, the back view is not consistent.
  • main concern is the legs

Figure 4.3
Feedback on model sheet(28/10/24)
  • the legs need to bring forward slightly, its too far back for the silhouette.
  • the head is fine.

Figure 4.4
Feedback on model sheet(28/10/24)
  • clearly show the elbow lines and the feet.
  • can make some shape for the front view like the rest.
Figure 4.5
example(28/10/24)
  • emotion sheet, label the emotions.
  • two of the six look similar.

Week 9 (18/11/24) :
General Feedback -
  • always put the subject on the rule of third lines - either upper third or lower third.

Specific feedback -

  • add sun reflection

  • use the sunset and beach color palette - has a rich and golden color

  • make the objects near to the camera bigger

  • lecturer suggested that its best if I can place the character here.

REFLECTION

For this assignment, I had the opportunity to design a character and its environment, and I decided to create a unique character inspired by some of my favorite animated films, such as Lilo & Stitch and How to Train Your Dragon. The character I designed is a mix of different animals and iconic characters, combining elements that I love from both films. It was incredibly fun to bring this character to life, especially the process of experimenting with different features and blending them in a way that felt original. The coloring aspect was particularly enjoyable, as it allowed me to add personality and depth to the character. Additionally, designing the background environment to complement the character was a great way to showcase the character’s traits and make the scene feel cohesive. Overall, the assignment was a fun and creative challenge that allowed me to explore my passion for animation and character design.
