Week 2 (30/09/24): Timing, spacing, Arcs
Timing
- 1 second ; 24 frames
- 24fp - Film
- 25fp-30fp - TV (analog/digital)
- Slower actions - More Frames
- Faster actions - Less Frames
Frame Rate
- Standard animation rate: 24 fps (frames per second)
- On 1’s: Drawing on every frame (smooth, full animation)
- On 2’s: Drawing on every second frame (common practice)
- On 3’s: Drawing every third frame (less fluid, used for quicker actions)
Arcs
- Natural motion follows arcs (gravity impacts motion)
- Helps give weight and fluidity to objects
- Use arcs for realistic motion (e.g., bouncing ball, character movement)
- Breakdown drawings enhance the in-betweens for smoother arcs
Week 3 (07/10/24) : Squash and Stretch, Drag, Follow through &
Overlapping
- Pose to Pose: Plan key poses first; useful for controlled timing.
- Flexibility: Use stretch and squash for natural, organic movement.
- Straight Ahead: Draw frames sequentially for fluid, unpredictable movement.
- Key Rules:
- Shape: Maintain volume.
- Stretch & Squash: Stretch in motion, squash on impact.
- Timing: Smooth transitions for realism.
- Drag: Parts lag behind main movement due to momentum.
- Follow Through & Overlapping:
- Follow Through: Parts continue moving after stopping.
- Overlapping Action: Sections end at different times for realism (e.g., top, mid, end of a tail).
Week 4 (14/10/24) : Appeal and solid Drawing
Appeal
- Animation Quality: High-quality 3D modeling, rigging, texture, and lighting.
- Visual Appeal: Strong drawing skills and storytelling.
- Audio Appeal:
- Music: Matches mood/emotion.
- Sound Effects: Clear and high-quality.
- Foley: Realistic mix/edit.
- Voice Over: Quality recording and performance.

- Make the ball thinner to match the movement but make sure it still looks the same size.
- use the last shape before it hits the ground- rotate it and make it the squash
- make the width of the squash smaller/bigger depending on the impact.

FEEDBACK
Week 3 (07/10/24):
Specific Feedback
- third bounce add one more in the middle(closer to the top)
- fourth bounce - move the middle ball closer to the top
- tail is fine.
- fourth bounce - no need to have squash - just leave it as it is
Week 4 (14/10/24):
Specific Feedback
- add extra frame for each frame, too fast
- bounce up make the tail one curve, no need too much. connect to the thicker part of the tail
- tail size need to be consistent at the ending.

REFLECTION
The exercises we did in class, with the lecturer guiding us through each step, have been incredibly valuable to my understanding of animation. I’m truly thankful for these sessions as they provided a hands-on approach to learning, allowing me to apply the concepts directly and gain a deeper understanding of the animation process. The lecturer’s feedback and structured walkthroughs helped clarify difficult concepts, and the practical exercises allowed me to practice and improve my skills in a real-world context. These sessions have given me the confidence to explore animation more freely, and I now feel more equipped to tackle future projects
