Project 1: Proposal

Final Proposal submission 19/02/24
Description
Our of 3 of my groups ideas on cultural sensitivity, we decided on the Topic
"Yami-Kawaii" because we thought it was unique and interesting as not many are
aware of this design or they are but do not know the specific name for it. our
idea for the final product is a graphic t-shirt as that is something that is
in trend nowadays and many teenagers and adults wear it often as it is a
comfortable yet trendy fashion choice.
Project 2: Field Study

Description
For our Field study, we were one of the groups that are going to Osaka,
Japan for this project. we went to a few fashion streets to find this design
such as in Dontonburi and Amerika-Mura. we were fortunate enough to find a
few shops and were even able to interview a few people working at those
shops such as Volcan & Aphrodite located in Amerika-Mura street. we
found that the locals there often like to shop for these type of clothing
and even when walking the streets of Osaka, you can see many people wearing
these type of fashion often. other than fashion there are many street art
such as spray paint walls and manhole covers as well as sticker shops that
also include 'Yami-Kawaii' in their designs.
In the train stations in Osaka, Japan there are many Pamphlets with a
variety of designs on them and we decided to create a look book in a
pamphlet form as the ones we found at the train station.

Description
For our final project, we had split our parts by having 4 people work on the graphic t0shirt and the accessories for the fashion part and 2 people working on the pamphlet look book. I had been tasked to do the look book by first sketching out the layout of the pamphlet and planning what type of photos to take of the models, T-shirts and accessories. Then my main task was to draw out the front cover as shown the sketch. we followed the theme of an arcade machine as shown on the t-shirt design and used colors that matched the t-shirts and our overall theme 'Yami-Kawaii'.
For the type of pamphlet, we decided to follow the pamphlets that we found on the metro stations in Osaka, Japan. we also did some research on the look books from Japan and used those as reference.
REFLECTION
I think this project was a good learning as well as a fun/ adventurous
experience as I got the chance to explore Osaka/Kyoto, Japan with my
groupmates. While we did our research, we also had a lot of free time to
go explore amongst ourselves around Osaka. We got to interview locals from
the area which was a pleasant experience as they were all very friendly
and polite. i was very surprised that many locals in Osaka like this type
of fashion and wear it often in the streets, We saw many different fashion
styles and got to observe the locals fashion. We learned that they were so
many different ways to style the 'Yami-Kawaii' design.
Through our interviews, we find that many people really like the
'Yami-Kawaii' designs and that there are many similar shops in the fashion
districts that we visited such as Amerika-Mura street in Osaka, that sell
these type of clothing and graphic t-shirts. While walking the streets of
Osaka, we also came across some street designs such as wall paint and on
the manhole covers as well as sticker shops that sell the 'Yami-kawaii'
designs.
