The Potato Eaters (UNSDG 1: no poverty)(13/02/24)
Artist: Vincent Van Gogh
Medium: Oil Painting
Created: 1885
Location: Nuenen, Netherlands
Observation:
The potato eaters is a landscape oil painting made by Vincent Van Gogh, the famous Dutch Artist. this painting shows a group of five people wearing old worn-out clothing who seem to be family, gathered around a small wooden table in the middle of the room, lit up by a single candle above. on the left side of the table, there seems to be a plate of steaming hot potatoes and on the right, a middle aged women is pouring a cup of tea for everyone. They are in a small house that is slightly crooked. for the Visual Elements, the whole painting can be seen using earth colors but mainly green and brown, the artist was supposingly trying to duplicate the color of a potato that was just harvested out of the ground. Overall, it may not be a very eye-catching painting but it holds a very deep meaning to it. (152 words)
Analysis:
This painting shows a contrast between the middle of the painting where the candle is and the surrounding areas that are further away from the candle. due to the fact that the shadows are not very contrasted and the background still being visible, this is considered chiaroscuro contrast. the painting is also approximately balanced as the number of people on each side is equal. the background as well is approximately symmetrical, for example; the windows on the left side of the painting are smaller but more in numbers, while the window on the right side is larger but lesser in numbers. there is also a slight emphasis on the only lit up candle in the middle of the room that shines light on the table and the contents on the table. Interpretation:
This Oil painting was based of The De Groot family that consisted of the mother Cornelia and her children Hendrik, Peter and Gordina who are a family of peasants. They all lived in the little ‘semi-detached’ cottage. Vincent, the Artist knew the Gordina personally (who appears in the painting) and drew as well as painted Gordina (1855–1927) on several occasions. He continued to think about the family even after he left Nuenen. the clock on the left shows 7pm, the potatoes are eaten throughout the day for breakfast, lunch and dinner. the hands of the family members=s in the painting seem to be rough and the clothing are old and worn-out which shows that they worked hard for the meal Infront of them even if it was a simple meal like potatoes.
