LECTURES

Week 1 (06/02/24): Introduction & Briefing / Lecture Videos Topic 1-3

Contrast & Gestalt theory

Figure 1.1
Contrast Example (06/02/24)

-principle of similarity

Figure 1.2
principle of symmetry Example (06/02/24)

Human Eye creates a connected / complete design even with different separate shapes

-principle of continuation

Figure 1.3
principle of continuation Example (06/02/24)
Huamn eye follows the movement of a continues design

-principle of closure

Figure 1.4
principle of closure Example (06/02/24)
Human eye can still identify the shape even though it is not fully outlined

-principle of proximity

Figure 1.5
principle of proximity Example (06/02/24)
process of the placement of related design elements are placed together, while non-related elements are places apart.

-principle of figure/ ground

Figure 1.6
principle of figure/ ground Example (06/02/24)
the objects are shown either in the foreground or the background

-law of symmetry and order

Balance

Repetition Example (06/02/24)

Creates Rhythm and Pattern

Movement

Alignment

Week 2 (13/02/24): Lecture Videos Topic 4-5

Harmony

Figure 2.2
Harmony Example (13/02/24)

Multiple elements that fit well together (common trait)

May fit the same theme, same aesthetic style or mood

Unity

Figure 2.3
Unity Example (13/02/24)

Repetition of Particular elements

very united design, balanced

Proportion

Symbol

Pictorial Symbol

Figure 2,5
Pictorial Symbol Example (13/02/24)

-simplified / related images

Abstract Symbol

Figure 2.6
Abstract Symbol Example (13/02/24)

- less detailed images but related

Arbitrary Symbol

- no resemblance to image/ objects

Image & word

Figure 2.7
image and word Example (13/02/24)

-important to find Suitable and Relevant images

Week 3 (20/02/24): Lecture Videos Topic 6

Visual Analysis

include 3 phases

phase 1: observation

  • looking closely and identifying visual elements
  • looking, thinking and finding words to describe your observation
Phase 2: Analysis
  • identify the design principles in the design and describe how it applies to the design
phase 3: Interpretation
  • combine your observation, analysis and description by adding facts to support them like historical context
  • the meaning and the purpose

15. Life on Land
16. Peace, justice and Strong institutions
17. Partnership for Goals

Figure 2.9
The Potato Eaters (UNSDG 1: no poverty)(13/02/24)
Artist: Vincent Van Gogh
Medium: Oil Painting
Created: 1885
Location: Nuenen, Netherlands
“These folk, who are eating their potatoes by the light of their little lamp, have tilled the earth themselves with these hands they are putting in the dish, and so it speaks of manual labor and – that they have thus honestly earned their food,” said by Vincent Van Gogh himself about this painting.
the goal is to show people that once we reach the goal  'no Poverty', we can avoid and prevent future generations experience this type of living conditions.

Desc
- color was based on a dirty unpeeled potato
- their hands are rough , meaning they worked hard
- clothes seem to have discoloration ( meaning dirty)
- sharing one plate of potatoes and small cup of tea
- one light up candle
- small table

Design Principle
-Contrast
  • this art work by Vincent focuses on the light from the single candle, illuminating the middle of the table but turns dark in the surrounding areas. i would consider this artwork as chiaroscuro contrast which is the pronounced contrast between areas of light and dark within a composition.
- approximate symmetry balance
  • I've noticed a balance between for the number of people on each ride are on each side of the painting are equal as well as both sides having windows, the left side windows being smaller but more and on the right, there is one larger window.
  • i labeled it as an approximate balance meaning it doesn't particularly fit in either symmetrical or asymmetrical.

FEEDBACK
Week 2 (14/02/24):
Specific Feedback: can remain in point form, write relation to goal before description and principles after description. talk about tenebrism and chiaroscuro in contrast to go more in depth. add more to lectures. and start on task 2.

General Feedback: Explain(short) in your own words as well as include one image for each Design principle.

Week 3 (21/02/24):
