Task 3: Type Design and Communication
Research
Dissection of typeface
Figure 1.5
Dissection of the letter 'H' (futura Std- medium condensed)
11/11/23
the letter 'H' has two different stroke width, while the vertical stroke
has the same width, the horizontal stroke is slightly smaller.
Figure 1.6
Dissection of the letter 'O' (futura Std- medium
condensed) 11/11/23
the letter 'O' gets thinner in the middle but the shape of the o is
consistent on both top and bottom.
Figure 1.7
Dissection of the letter 'g' (futura Std- medium
condensed) 11/11/23
the round part of the 'g' is slightly bigger than the letter 'O'. and
the curved stroke on the right has 2 different widths like the letter
'o'.

Digitalization of ideas
Figure 1.9
First Attempt 20/11/23
I relied a lot on the brush tool which i found out made my letterforms
look not consistent and messy. as stated in class there should not be
'giveaways' showing that i only used the brush tool.
Figure 2.1
punctuation 27/11/23
Our lecturer Mr Vinod had us take a look at this video, the period
and the comma should be the same height and width and the comma tail
should be around the same height as the period.
hashtag's should also not be too distorted and exclamation mark's
dot should be the same as the period.

Figure 2.4
copy and pasting strokes 25/11/23
To make them look more consistent i used the same stroke i did for
certain letter forms for example: the top stroke for 'I', i reused for
'T'.
Figure 2.6
second attempt 27/11/23
Figure 2.7
thinning strokes 27/11/23
Needed to make the extra strokes thinner to not confuse them as a
different letter. i also did the same by adjusting the outline to match
the lines together as one.
Figure 2.8
doing the same for letters 'G' 'O' 27/11/23
i tried to duplicate those extra strokes to make them consistent on all
the letter forms above as well as the letter 'E'.
Figure 2.9
adjusting width 11/12/23
To further make them more consistent, i readjusted the letter forms
to the same width.

FINAL POSTER DESIGN
FEEDBACK
Week 8 (13/11/23):
Specific Feedback: prefered sketch is too thin, use sketch number 7 instead. can proceed to digitalization.
Week 9 (20/11/23): Absent
Week 10 (27/10/23):
Specific Feedback: Punctuation are not usually very decorative. like - letter c tone down the curve, dont rely to much on brush tool, s & n needs to smoother. not too many anchor points. take out as many as possible. Seperate the parts of the letter design to also document it in e-portfolio.
General Feedback: can create your own guide and grids, following grids and guilds can help make your letters consistent and neat. Cap line should be closer to ascender line. visual weight and consistency has to be the same for each letter. thinking about writing and the space created between letters due to the design. not too much contrast.
Week 11 (4/12/23):
Specific Feedback: the crossover for e,g,c,o are too thick, need to make it thinner. letter height should be around 700pt. pay attention to the side bearing. General Feedback: faster function- smooth tool, end letterform with a dent. each character will require their own amount of kerning and letterspacing. remember to set your space. writing out hohoho or nononon squint and check your kerning
Week 13 (18/12/23):
Specific Feedback: delete the 'the design school' on the top and add space between the letter and the page sides by 10mm. place your name and font name in the middle between the 2 't's.
General feedback: suggested to add lines in-between. needs to stand out.
REFLECTION
Experience
i think this assignment was overall a good lesson as i got to dig deeper
into the process of creating letterforms and every important step needed
to create a font. it was interesting watching how my sketches of writings
slowly came together as a digitalized font and being able to write with it
in font lab. i got to learn about font lab and though the side bearings
was slightly confusing, it was satisfying to see my own digitalized font
being able to be used in illustrator.
Observation
through dissecting certain fonts, i observed that the fonts that
look very similar in their strokes had a slight different in
width and the 'o' as well were different. however they still made it look
very similar. this helped in my digitalization of mt font because the
strokes don't have to be the exact same but make sure that it still looks
consistent to the viewers eyes. this really made my digitalization a lot
more simple and smooth because i didn't have to worry too much about
measuring the width of every part of my letter.
Findings
i find that there is a lot more to just designing the font, as there are
also task like adjusting side bearings and kerning. there are rules to
designing commas and hashtags. it is a very time consuming task that
requires a lot of patients and ideas.
