RESEARCH
Chosen Urban Legend: Screaming Jenny
Summary:
Screaming jenny is about a woman named jenny who was drinking soup next to a fire one day and accidentally had her skirt caught on fire. realising too late, she quicky ran out screaming for help. she ran onto the train tracks and did not see the train coming right at her. nowadays people still report saying they could still see her ghost screaming for help on the train tracks.
PROGRESSION
Sketches and mood board
Figure 1.2
moodboard, sketch, and description (10/11/23)
- i chose to use the start of the turning point for my illustration, where her skirt caught on fir,e therefore leading to her entire body catching flames.
Digitalization
Figure 1.3
making the outline of the artwork (16/11/23)
Figure 1.4
Adding details (16/11/23)
- i did a rather simple design to show that jenny was a women and the place she was living in was a small abandoned storage shed near the train tracks.
Animation Gif process:
idea: my idea was to animated the fire of the shadow and the fire in the fireplace. i also decided to animated the fire lit onto her dress tow show how the situation started.
Figure 1.8
Process in Adobe Illustrator (25/11/23)
- i adjusted the tips of the fire areas to different directions to bring the fire to life.
- i also adjusted the fire to the shadow to show how the shadow is showing her in flames.
- i was told to make the shadows flicker slightly to make it more realistic because it is the fire is also somewhat flickering and isn't constant.
- i reduced parts of her dress where it is burning to show how the fire is spreading throughout her dress.
My Attempts:
Figure 1.9
attempt #1 (25/11/23)
- I must've accidentally moved the design of the floor while adjusting the flames, so I had to go back and check.

attempt #2 (25/11/23)

Artist Statement
i wanted the animate the fire to make it more clear for the audience that in the shadow the lady was caught on fire as well as how the women is screaming in anguish as she ignited in flames which coordinates to the title of the urban legend 'Screaming Jenny'. i also added a small detail on her dress, i animated the fire at that area as well but also added how her dress is slowly getting eaten by the flames as she peacefully drinks her soup showing that she did not realise that a fire had caught her dress until it was too late thus, showing the aftermath which is the shadow.
FEEDBACK
Week 7:
Specific feedback: sketch/design was too poster-like, must be an illustration of a scene.
General feedback: can add texture
Week 8:
Specific feedback: design was still very poster-like, refer to framed ink PDF in lecture files
General Feedback: ILW
Week 9:
Specific feedback: the design was much better, can add more texture.
General Feedback: animation doesn't have to be too many frames, as long as you meet the requirements, just a few frames are enough.
Week 10:
Specific Feedback: The shadows should flicker a bit.
General Feedback: none
REFLECTION
I had quite a few designs that were rejected due to the fact that I did not quite understand the assignment. I find that having a clear idea and sketch of the design was really helpful when starting the digitalization, or else more mistakes would happen while digitalizing. I had an incident where my laptop lagged and my work disappeared on the second last day before the submission date, so I had to redo everything before the day after, but luckily managed to submit on time. I find that this assignment really made me put what I have learned over the last few weeks to use and help polish my skills with Adobe Illustrator.
